TWENTY-NINE

Will was already in the office; Amy arrived a little behind Morgan and Ben. All of them had a look of apprehension on their faces, combined with the wide-eyed fear of what today was going to bring them. Ben smiled at her.

‘Did you get any sleep?’

‘Not really, you?’

‘Some.’

As they trailed in, Will stood up. ‘Morning, nothing to report I’m afraid.’

‘Neither of them has turned up?’ Amy’s voice was indignant.

Will shrugged. ‘As you know something of this magnitude requires a little help from above. DI Claire Williams is on her way down to muck in and give a hand.’

‘That’s good, we’ll take all the help we can get. I have some news about the forensic samples retrieved from Shea Wilkinson.’

‘Great, that’s sure to be a big help. I think your DI is calling a briefing at 8:30; he said about meeting in the blue room.’

Ben gave him a thumbs up and slipped into his office, where he sat down behind the desk and logged on to his computer. Morgan, feeling awkward, sat down at hers; Amy collected the cups from last night and disappeared to the kitchen, leaving her and Will alone.

‘I take it there’s nothing. No sightings, no bodies?’

‘No, I told you I’d let you know if anything came in. I wouldn’t keep something like that from any of you. Des is your colleague and friend. I may have to run the investigation, but I’m open and honest; there’s no sneaking around behind anyone’s back.’

‘Sorry, I know, I guess we’re all a little freaked out about this. It’s just so weird.’

‘Where do you think he is?’

She glanced at Ben’s office. He was now on the phone and pacing up and down his office; Amy was still making coffee.

‘I don’t think Milly and Des disappearing within such a short space of time is a coincidence. It must be connected; I just don’t know how. He’s not the violent type; in fact he gets scared if he has to work with me because he thinks I’m bad luck and will get him killed.’

Will arched an eyebrow at her. ‘Ahh, yes. You have been in some difficult situations. You really need to meet Annie, you could trade horror stories with each other.’

‘Where is she now?’

‘Out of harm’s way or at least I pray she is, and running a quirky little shop near to Bowness pier that sells crystals and all that kind of stuff, home-made bath salts, candles. I don’t think she particularly enjoys it as much as she did being a police officer but something had to give, especially when she found out she was pregnant with our son, Alfie.’

‘She sounds cool, I think I know that shop. I’ve been in it a few times. I bet she’d like my aunt Ettie, she makes these amazing home-made teas for different ailments.’

‘Jesus, what is this, world share your family history day?’

Amy was shaking her head at the pair of them. ‘We need to find Des and stop messing around. No offence, guys, but come on, who gives a shit about herbal tea and all that voodoo stuff?’

Will nodded.
